           “Now,remember,”saidCountOrlóv-Denísovtothesergeantatparting,“ifyouhavebeenlyingI’llhaveyouhangedlikeadog;butifit’strueyoushallhaveahundredgoldpieces!”

           Withoutreplying,thesergeant,witharesoluteair,mountedandrodeawaywithGrékovwhosemenhadquicklyassembled.Theydisappearedintotheforest,andCountOrlóv-Denísov,havingseenGrékovoff,returned,shiveringfromthefreshnessoftheearlydawnandexcitedbywhathehadundertakenonhisownresponsibility,andbeganlookingattheenemycamp,nowjustvisibleinthedeceptivelightofdawnandthedyingcampfires.Ourcolumnsoughttohavebeguntoappearonanopendeclivitytohisright.Helookedinthatdirection,butthoughthecolumnswouldhavebeenvisiblequitefaroff,theywerenottobeseen.ItseemedtothecountthatthingswerebeginningtostirintheFrenchcamp,andhiskeen-sightedadjutantconfirmedthis.

           “Oh,itisreallytoolate,”saidCountOrlóv,lookingatthecamp.
