           What“stillthesame”mightmeanPrincessMarydidnotask,butwithanunnoticedglanceatlittleseven-year-oldNicholas,whowassittinginfrontofherlookingwithpleasureatthetown,shebowedherheadanddidnotraiseitagaintilltheheavycoach,rumbling,shakingandswaying,cametoastop.Thecarriagestepsclatteredastheywereletdown.

           Thecarriagedoorwasopened.Onthelefttherewaswater—agreatriver—andontherightaporch.Therewerepeopleattheentrance:servants,andarosygirlwithalargeplaitofblackhair,smilingasitseemedtoPrincessMaryinanunpleasantlyaffectedway.(ThiswasSónya.)PrincessMaryranupthesteps.“Thisway,thisway!”saidthegirl,withthesameartificialsmile,andtheprincessfoundherselfinthehallfacinganelderlywomanofOrientaltype,whocamerapidlytomeetherwithalookofemotion.Thiswasthecountess.SheembracedPrincessMaryandkissedher.

           “Monenfant!”shemuttered,“jevousaimeetvousconnaisdepuislongtemps.”*

           Despiteherexcitement,PrincessMaryrealizedthatthiswasthecountessandthatitwasnecessarytosaysomethingtoher.Hardlyknowinghowshedidit,shecontrivedtoutterafewpolitephrasesinFrenchinthesametoneasthosethathadbeenaddressedtoher,andasked:“Howishe?”

           “Thedoctorsaysthatheisnotindanger,”saidthecountess,butasshespokesheraisedhereyeswithasigh,andhergestureconveyedacontradictionofherwords.

           “Whereishe?CanIseehim—canI?”askedtheprincess.
