Chapter 12

           Whensimilardoubtshadassailedhimbefore,theyhadbeentheresultofhisownwrongdoing,andatthebottomofhishearthehadfeltthatrelieffromhisdespairandfromthosedoubtswastobefoundwithinhimself.Butnowhefeltthattheuniversehadcrumbledbeforehiseyesandonlymeaninglessruinsremained,andthisnotbyanyfaultofhisown.Hefeltthatitwasnotinhispowertoregainfaithinthemeaningoflife.

           Aroundhiminthedarknessmenwerestandingandevidentlysomethingabouthiminterestedthemgreatly.Theyweretellinghimsomethingandaskinghimsomething.Thentheyledhimawaysomewhere,andatlasthefoundhimselfinacorneroftheshedamongmenwhowerelaughingandtalkingonallsides.

           “Well,then,mates...thatveryprincewho...”somevoiceattheotherendoftheshedwassaying,withastrongemphasisonthewordwho.

           Sittingsilentandmotionlessonaheapofstrawagainstthewall,Pierresometimesopenedandsometimesclosedhiseyes.Butassoonasheclosedthemhesawbeforehimthedreadfulfaceofthefactorylad—especiallydreadfulbecauseofitssimplicity—andthefacesofthemurderers,evenmoredreadfulbecauseoftheirdisquiet.Andheopenedhiseyesagainandstaredvacantlyintothedarknessaroundhim.

           Besidehiminastoopingpositionsatasmallmanofwhosepresencehewasfirstmadeawarebyastrongsmellofperspirationwhichcamefromhimeverytimehemoved.Thismanwasdoingsomethingtohislegsinthedarkness,andthoughPierrecouldnotseehisfacehefeltthatthemancontinuallyglancedathim.
