           Therewasastirintheranksofthesoldiersanditwasevidentthattheywereallhurrying—notasmenhurrytodosomethingtheyunderstand,butaspeoplehurrytofinishanecessarybutunpleasantandincomprehensibletask.

           AFrenchofficialwearingascarfcameuptotherightoftherowofprisonersandreadoutthesentenceinRussianandinFrench.

           Twelvesharpshooterswithmusketssteppedoutoftherankswithafirmregulartreadandhaltedeightpacesfromthepost.Pierreturnedawaytoavoidseeingwhatwasgoingtohappen.Suddenlyacrackling,rollingnoisewasheardwhichseemedtohimlouderthanthemostterrificthunder,andhelookedround.Therewassomesmoke,andtheFrenchmenweredoingsomethingnearthepit,withpalefacesandtremblinghands.Twomoreprisonerswereledup.Inthesamewayandwithsimilarlooks,thesetwoglancedvainlyattheonlookerswithonlyasilentappealforprotectionintheireyes,evidentlyunabletounderstandorbelievewhatwasgoingtohappentothem.
