           “Ah,ah!”mutteredtheofficerwithafrown.“Wellthen,march!”

           AcrowdhadcollectedroundtheUhlans.NearesttoPierrestoodthepockmarkedpeasantwomanwiththelittlegirl,andwhenthepatrolstartedshemovedforward.

           “Wherearetheytakingyouto,youpoordear?”saidshe.“Andthelittlegirl,thelittlegirl,whatamItodowithherifshe’snottheirs?”saidthewoman.

           “Whatdoesthatwomanwant?”askedtheofficer.

           Pierrewasasifintoxicated.Hiselationincreasedatthesightofthelittlegirlhehadsaved.
