           HerushedatthebarefootedFrenchmanand,beforethelatterhadtimetodrawhissword,knockedhimoffhisfeetandhammeredhimwithhisfists.Shoutsofapprovalwereheardfromthecrowdaround,andatthesamemomentamountedpatrolofFrenchUhlansappearedfromroundthecorner.TheUhlanscameupatatrottoPierreandtheFrenchmanandsurroundedthem.Pierrerememberednothingofwhathappenedafterthat.HeonlyrememberedbeatingsomeoneandbeingbeatenandfinallyfeelingthathishandswereboundandthatacrowdofFrenchsoldiersstoodaroundhimandweresearchinghim.

           “Lieutenant,hehasadagger,”werethefirstwordsPierreunderstood.

           “Ah,aweapon?”saidtheofficerandturnedtothebarefootedsoldierwhohadbeenarrestedwithPierre.“Allright,youcantellallaboutitatthecourt-martial.”ThenheturnedtoPierre.“DoyouspeakFrench?”

           Pierrelookedaroundhimwithbloodshoteyesanddidnotreply.Hisfaceprobablylookedveryterrible,fortheofficersaidsomethinginawhisperandfourmoreUhlanslefttheranksandplacedthemselvesonbothsidesofPierre.

           “DoyouspeakFrench?”theofficeraskedagain,keepingatadistancefromPierre.“Calltheinterpreter.”

           AlittlemaninRussiancivilianclothesrodeoutfromtheranks,andbyhisclothesandmannerofspeakingPierreatonceknewhimtobeaFrenchsalesmanfromoneoftheMoscowshops.

           “Hedoesnotlooklikeacommonman,”saidtheinterpreter,afterasearchinglookatPierre.

           “Ah,helooksverymuchlikeanincendiary,”remarkedtheofficer.“Andaskhimwhoheis,”headded.
