           Fromthebattlefieldadjutantshehadsentout,andorderliesfromhismarshals,keptgallopinguptoNapoleonwithreportsoftheprogressoftheaction,butallthesereportswerefalse,bothbecauseitwasimpossibleintheheatofbattletosaywhatwashappeningatanygivenmomentandbecausemanyoftheadjutantsdidnotgototheactualplaceofconflictbutreportedwhattheyhadheardfromothers;andalsobecausewhileanadjutantwasridingmorethanamiletoNapoleoncircumstanceschangedandthenewshebroughtwasalreadybecomingfalse.ThusanadjutantgallopedupfromMuratwithtidingsthatBorodinóhadbeenoccupiedandthebridgeovertheKolocháwasinthehandsoftheFrench.TheadjutantaskedwhetherNapoleonwishedthetroopstocrossit?Napoleongaveordersthatthetroopsshouldformuponthefarthersideandwait.Butbeforethatorderwasgiven—almostassooninfactastheadjutanthadleftBorodinó—thebridgehadbeenretakenbytheRussiansandburned,intheveryskirmishatwhichPierrehadbeenpresentatthebeginningofthebattle.

           AnadjutantgallopedupfromtheflècheswithapaleandfrightenedfaceandreportedtoNapoleonthattheirattackhadbeenrepulsed,Campanwounded,andDavoutkilled;yetattheverytimetheadjutanthadbeentoldthattheFrenchhadbeenrepulsed,theflècheshadinfactbeenrecapturedbyotherFrenchtroops,andDavoutwasaliveandonlyslightlybruised.OnthebasisofthesenecessarilyuntrustworthyreportsNapoleongavehisorders,whichhadeitherbeenexecutedbeforehegavethemorcouldnotbeandwerenotexecuted.
