           Butwhethertheyweremovingorstationary,whethertheywereFrenchorRussian,couldnotbediscoveredfromtheShevárdinoRedoubt.

           ThesunhadrisenbrightlyanditsslantingraysstruckstraightintoNapoleon’sfaceas,shadinghiseyeswithhishand,helookedattheflèches.Thesmokespreadoutbeforethem,andattimesitlookedasifthesmokeweremoving,attimesasifthetroopsmoved.Sometimesshoutswereheardthroughthefiring,butitwasimpossibletotellwhatwasbeingdonethere.
