           “Willyoucome?”

           “Yes,I’llcomewithyou,”repliedPierre,lookingroundforhisgroom.

           Itwasonlynowthathenoticedwoundedmenstaggeringalongorbeingcarriedonstretchers.Onthatverymeadowhehadriddenoverthedaybefore,asoldierwaslyingathwarttherowsofscentedhay,withhisheadthrownawkwardlybackandhisshakooff.

           “Whyhaven’ttheycarriedhimaway?”Pierrewasabouttoask,butseeingthesternexpressionoftheadjutantwhowasalsolookingthatway,hecheckedhimself.

           PierredidnotfindhisgroomandrodealongthehollowwiththeadjutanttoRaévski’sRedoubt.Hishorselaggedbehindtheadjutant’sandjoltedhimateverystep.

           “Youdon’tseemtobeusedtoriding,Count?”remarkedtheadjutant.

           “Noit’snotthat,butheractionseemssojerky,”saidPierreinapuzzledtone.

           “Why...she’swounded!”saidtheadjutant.“Intheoffforelegabovetheknee.Abullet,nodoubt.Icongratulateyou,Count,onyourbaptismoffire!”

           HavingriddeninthesmokepasttheSixthCorps,behindtheartillerywhichhadbeenmovedforwardandwasinaction,deafeningthemwiththenoiseoffiring,theycametoasmallwood.Thereitwascoolandquiet,withascentofautumn.Pierreandtheadjutantdismountedandwalkedupthehillonfoot.

           “Isthegeneralhere?”askedtheadjutantonreachingtheknoll.

           “Hewashereaminuteagobuthasjustgonethatway,”someonetoldhim,pointingtotheright.

           TheadjutantlookedatPierreasifpuzzledwhattodowithhimnow.

           “Don’ttroubleaboutme,”saidPierre.
