           Hedidnotnoticethesoundofthebulletswhistlingfromeveryside,ortheprojectilesthatflewoverhim,didnotseetheenemyontheothersideoftheriver,andforalongtimedidnotnoticethekilledandwounded,thoughmanyfellnearhim.Helookedabouthimwithasmilewhichdidnotleavehisface.

           “Why’sthatfellowinfrontoftheline?”shoutedsomebodyathimagain.

           “Totheleft!...Keeptotheright!”themenshoutedtohim.

           Pierrewenttotheright,andunexpectedlyencounteredoneofRaévski’sadjutantswhomheknew.Theadjutantlookedangrilyathim,evidentlyalsointendingtoshoutathim,butonrecognizinghimhenodded.

           “Howhaveyougothere?”hesaid,andgallopedon.

           Pierre,feelingoutofplacethere,havingnothingtodo,andafraidofgettinginsomeone’swayagain,gallopedaftertheadjutant.

           “What’shappeninghere?MayIcomewithyou?”heasked.

           “Onemoment,onemoment!”repliedtheadjutant,andridinguptoastoutcolonelwhowasstandinginthemeadow,hegavehimsomemessageandthenaddressedPierre.

           “Whyhaveyoucomehere,Count?”heaskedwithasmile.“Stillinquisitive?”

           “Yes,yes,”assentedPierre.

           Buttheadjutantturnedhishorseaboutandrodeon.

           “Hereit’stolerable,”saidhe,“butwithBagratiónontheleftflankthey’regettingitfrightfullyhot.”

           “Really?”saidPierre.“Whereisthat?”

           “Comealongwithmetoourknoll.Wecangetaviewfromthereandinourbatteryitisstillbearable,”saidtheadjutant.
