           Whenthecarriageshadallpassedin,thecrowd,carryingPétyawithit,streamedforwardintotheKrémlinSquarewhichwasalreadyfullofpeople.Therewerepeoplenotonlyinthesquare,buteverywhere—ontheslopesandontheroofs.AssoonasPétyafoundhimselfinthesquareheclearlyheardthesoundofbellsandthejoyousvoicesofthecrowdthatfilledthewholeKrémlin.

           Forawhilethecrowdwaslessdense,butsuddenlyallheadswerebared,andeveryonerushedforwardinonedirection.Pétyawasbeingpressedsothathecouldscarcelybreathe,andeverybodyshouted,“Hurrah!hurrah!hurrah!”Pétyastoodontiptoeandpushedandpinched,butcouldseenothingexceptthepeopleabouthim.

           Allthefacesborethesameexpressionofexcitementandenthusiasm.Atradesman’swifestandingbesidePétyasobbed,andthetearsrandownhercheeks.

           “Father!Angel!Dearone!”shekeptrepeating,wipingawayhertearswithherfingers.

           “Hurrah!”washeardonallsides.

           Foramomentthecrowdstoodstill,butthenitmadeanotherrushforward.

           Quitebesidehimself,Pétya,clinchinghisteethandrollinghiseyesferociously,pushedforward,elbowinghiswayandshouting“hurrah!”asifhewerepreparedthatinstanttokillhimselfandeveryoneelse,butonbothsidesofhimotherpeoplewithsimilarlyferociousfacespushedforwardandeverybodyshouted“hurrah!”

           “SothisiswhattheEmperoris!”thoughtPétya.“No,Ican’tpetitionhimmyself—thatwouldbetoobold.
