           AsheapproachedtheKrémlinheevenbegantoavoidbeingcrushedandresolutelystuckouthiselbowsinamenacingway.ButwithintheTrinityGatewayhewassopressedtothewallbypeoplewhoprobablywereunawareofthepatrioticintentionswithwhichhehadcomethatinspiteofallhisdeterminationhehadtogivein,andstopwhilecarriagespassedin,rumblingbeneaththearchway.BesidePétyastoodapeasantwoman,afootman,twotradesmen,andadischargedsoldier.Afterstandingsometimeinthegateway,Pétyatriedtomoveforwardinfrontoftheotherswithoutwaitingforallthecarriagestopass,andhebeganresolutelyworkinghiswaywithhiselbows,butthewomanjustinfrontofhim,whowasthefirstagainstwhomhedirectedhisefforts,angrilyshoutedathim:

           “Whatareyoushovingfor,younglordling?Don’tyouseewe’reallstandingstill?Thenwhypush?”

           “Anybodycanshove,”saidthefootman,andalsobeganworkinghiselbowstosucheffectthathepushedPétyaintoaveryfilthycornerofthegateway.

           Pétyawipedhisperspiringfacewithhishandsandpulledupthedampcollarwhichhehadarrangedsowellathometoseemlikeaman’s.
