           MaryHendríkhovnawasthewifeoftheregimentaldoctor,aprettyyoungGermanwomanhehadmarriedinPoland.Thedoctor,whetherfromlackofmeansorbecausehedidnotliketopartfromhisyoungwifeintheearlydaysoftheirmarriage,tookheraboutwithhimwhereverthehussarregimentwentandhisjealousyhadbecomeastandingjokeamongthehussarofficers.

           Rostóvthrewhiscloakoverhisshoulders,shoutedtoLavrúshkatofollowwiththethings,and—nowslippinginthemud,nowsplashingrightthroughit—setoffwithIlyíninthelesseningrainandthedarknessthatwasoccasionallyrentbydistantlightning.

           “Rostóv,whereareyou?”

           “Here.Whatlightning!”theycalledtooneanother.
