           Iftheyregrettedhavingtoretreat,itwasonlybecausetheyhadtoleavebilletstheyhadgrownaccustomedto,orsomeprettyyoungPolishlady.Ifthethoughtthatthingslookedbadchancedtoenteranyone’shead,hetriedtobeascheerfulasbefitsagoodsoldierandnottothinkofthegeneraltrendofaffairs,butonlyofthetasknearesttohand.FirsttheycampedgailybeforeVílna,makingacquaintancewiththePolishlandowners,preparingforreviewsandbeingreviewedbytheEmperorandotherhighcommanders.ThencameanordertoretreattoSventsyánianddestroyanyprovisionstheycouldnotcarryawaywiththem.Sventsyániwasrememberedbythehussarsonlyasthedrunkencamp,anamethewholearmygavetotheirencampmentthere,andbecausemanycomplaintsweremadeagainstthetroops,who,takingadvantageoftheordertocollectprovisions,tookalsohorses,carriages,andcarpetsfromthePolishproprietors.RostóvrememberedSventsyáni,becauseonthefirstdayoftheirarrivalatthatsmalltownhechangedhissergeantmajorandwasunabletomanageallthedrunkenmenofhissquadronwho,unknowntohim,hadappropriatedfivebarrelsofoldbeer.FromSventsyánitheyretiredfartherandfarthertoDrissa,andthenceagainbeyondDrissa,drawingneartothefrontierofRussiaproper.

           OnthethirteenthofJulythePávlogradstookpartinaseriousactionforthefirsttime.

           OnthetwelfthofJuly,ontheeveofthataction,therewasaheavystormofrainandhail.Ingeneral,thesummerof1812wasremarkableforitsstorms.
