Chapter 12

           Butnowthecampaignwasbeginning,andhehadtoremainwithhisregiment.Andsinceithadtobeso,NicholasRostóv,aswasnaturaltohim,feltcontentedwiththelifeheledintheregimentandwasabletofindpleasureinthatlife.

           OnhisreturnfromhisfurloughNicholas,havingbeenjoyfullywelcomedbyhiscomrades,wassenttoobtainremountsandbroughtbackfromtheUkraineexcellenthorseswhichpleasedhimandearnedhimcommendationfromhiscommanders.Duringhisabsencehehadbeenpromotedcaptain,andwhentheregimentwasputonwarfootingwithanincreaseinnumbers,hewasagainallottedhisoldsquadron.

           Thecampaignbegan,theregimentwasmovedintoPolandondoublepay,newofficersarrived,newmenandhorses,andabovealleverybodywasinfectedwiththemerrilyexcitedmoodthatgoeswiththecommencementofawar,andRostóv,consciousofhisadvantageouspositionintheregiment,devotedhimselfentirelytothepleasuresandinterestsofmilitaryservice,thoughheknewthatsoonerorlaterhewouldhavetorelinquishthem.

           ThetroopsretiredfromVílnaforvariouscomplicatedreasonsofstate,politicalandstrategic.Eachstepoftheretreatwasaccompaniedbyacomplicatedinterplayofinterests,arguments,andpassionsatheadquarters.ForthePávlogradhussars,however,thewholeofthisretreatduringthefinestperiodofsummerandwithsufficientsupplieswasaverysimpleandagreeablebusiness.

           Itwasonlyatheadquartersthattherewasdepression,uneasiness,andintriguing;inthebodyofthearmytheydidnotaskthemselveswheretheyweregoingorwhy.
