           WhenAnnaMikháylovnareturnedfromCountBezúkhov’sthemoney,allincleannotes,waslyingreadyunderahandkerchiefonthecountess’littletable,andAnnaMikháylovnanoticedthatsomethingwasagitatingher.

           “Well,mydear?”askedthecountess.

           “Oh,whataterriblestateheisin!Onewouldnotknowhim,heissoill!Iwasonlythereafewmomentsandhardlysaidaword...”

           “Annette,forheaven’ssakedon’trefuseme,”thecountessbegan,withablushthatlookedverystrangeonherthin,dignified,elderlyface,andshetookthemoneyfromunderthehandkerchief.

           AnnaMikháylovnainstantlyguessedherintentionandstoopedtobereadytoembracethecountessattheappropriatemoment.

           “ThisisforBorísfromme,forhisoutfit.”

           AnnaMikháylovnawasalreadyembracingherandweeping.Thecountesswepttoo.Theyweptbecausetheywerefriends,andbecausetheywerekindhearted,andbecausethey—friendsfromchildhood—hadtothinkaboutsuchabasethingasmoney,andbecausetheiryouthwasover....Butthosetearswerepleasanttothemboth.
