           Theshafthorseswayedfromsidetoside,movinghisearsasifasking:“Isn’tittimetobeginnow?”Infront,alreadyfaraheadthedeepbellofthesleighringingfartherandfartheroff,theblackhorsesdrivenbyZakhárcouldbeclearlyseenagainstthewhitesnow.Fromthatsleighonecouldheartheshouts,laughter,andvoicesofthemummers.

           “Geeup,mydarlings!”shoutedNicholas,pullingthereinstoonesideandflourishingthewhip.

           Itwasonlybythekeenerwindthatmetthemandthejerksgivenbythesidehorseswhopulledharder—everincreasingtheirgallop—thatonenoticedhowfastthetroykawasflying.Nicholaslookedback.Withscreams,squeals,andwavingofwhipsthatcausedeventheshafthorsestogallop—theothersleighsfollowed.Theshafthorseswungsteadilybeneaththebowoveritshead,withnothoughtofslackeningpaceandreadytoputonspeedwhenrequired.

           Nicholasovertookthefirstsleigh.Theyweredrivingdownhillandcomingoutuponabroadtroddentrackacrossameadow,nearariver.

           “Wherearewe?”thoughthe.“It’stheKosóymeadow,Isuppose.Butno—thisissomethingnewI’veneverseenbefore.Thisisn’ttheKosóymeadownortheDëmkinhill,andheavenonlyknowswhatitis!Itissomethingnewandenchanted.Well,whateveritmaybe...”Andshoutingtohishorses,hebegantopassthefirstsleigh.

           Zakhárheldbackhishorsesandturnedhisface,whichwasalreadycoveredwithhoarfrosttohiseyebrows.

           Nicholasgavethehorsestherein,andZakhár,stretchingouthisarms,cluckedhistongueandlethishorsesgo.
