           “AndIremembertheirtellingmethatyouhadbeenbornunderacabbage,”saidNatásha,“andIrememberthatIdarednotdisbelieveitthen,butknewthatitwasnottrue,andIfeltsouncomfortable.”

           Whiletheyweretalkingamaidthrustherheadinattheotherdoorofthesittingroom.

           “Theyhavebroughtthecock,Miss,”shesaidinawhisper.

           “Itisn’twanted,Pólya.Tellthemtotakeitaway,”repliedNatásha.

           Inthemiddleoftheirtalkinthesittingroom,Dimmlercameinandwentuptotheharpthatstoodthereinacorner.Hetookoffitsclothcovering,andtheharpgaveoutajarringsound.

           “Mr.Dimmler,pleaseplaymyfavoritenocturnebyField,”cametheoldcountess’voicefromthedrawingroom.

           Dimmlerstruckachordand,turningtoNatásha,Nicholas,andSónya,remarked:“Howquietyouyoungpeopleare!”

           “Yes,we’rephilosophizing,”saidNatásha,glancingroundforamomentandthencontinuingtheconversation.Theywerenowdiscussingdreams.

           Dimmlerbegantoplay;Natáshawentontiptoenoiselesslytothetable,tookupacandle,carrieditout,andreturned,seatingherselfquietlyinherformerplace.Itwasdarkintheroomespeciallywheretheyweresittingonthesofa,butthroughthebigwindowsthesilverylightofthefullmoonfellonthefloor.Dimmlerhadfinishedthepiecebutstillsatsoftlyrunninghisfingersoverthestrings,evidentlyuncertainwhethertostoportoplaysomethingelse.
