           Havingasitwerereviewedherkingdom,testedherpower,andmadesurethateveryonewassubmissive,butthatallthesameitwasdull,Natáshabetookherselftotheballroom,pickedupherguitar,satdowninadarkcornerbehindabookcase,andbegantorunherfingersoverthestringsinthebass,pickingoutapassagesherecalledfromanoperashehadheardinPetersburgwithPrinceAndrew.Whatshedrewfromtheguitarwouldhavehadnomeaningforotherlisteners,butinherimaginationawholeseriesofreminiscencesarosefromthosesounds.Shesatbehindthebookcasewithhereyesfixedonastreakoflightescapingfromthepantrydoorandlistenedtoherselfandpondered.Shewasinamoodforbroodingonthepast.

           Sónyapassedtothepantrywithaglassinherhand.Natáshaglancedatherandatthecrackinthepantrydoor,anditseemedtoherthatsherememberedthelightfallingthroughthatcrackoncebeforeandSónyapassingwithaglassinherhand.“Yesitwasexactlythesame,”thoughtNatásha.

           “Sónya,whatisthis?”shecried,twangingathickstring.

           “Oh,youarethere!”saidSónyawithastart,andcamenearandlistened.“Idon’tknow.Astorm?”sheventuredtimidly,afraidofbeingwrong.

           “There!That’sjusthowshestartedandjusthowshecameupsmilingtimidlywhenallthishappenedbefore,”thoughtNatásha,“andinjustthesamewayIthoughttherewassomethinglackinginher.”

           “No,it’sthechorusfromTheWater-Carrier,listen!”andNatáshasangtheairofthechorussothatSónyashouldcatchit.“Wherewereyougoing?”sheasked.
