           Shepassedintothesittingroom,stoodtherethinkingawhile,andthenwentintothemaids’room.Thereanoldmaidservantwasgrumblingatayounggirlwhostoodpanting,havingjustruninthroughthecoldfromtheserfs’quarters.

           “Stopplaying—there’satimeforeverything,”saidtheoldwoman.

           “Letheralone,Kondrátevna,”saidNatásha.“Go,Mavrúshka,go.”

           HavingreleasedMavrúshka,Natáshacrossedthedancinghallandwenttothevestibule.Thereanoldfootmanandtwoyoungoneswereplayingcards.Theybrokeoffandroseassheentered.

           “WhatcanIdowiththem?”thoughtNatásha.

           “Oh,Nikíta,pleasego...wherecanIsendhim?...Yes,gototheyardandfetchafowl,please,acock,andyou,Misha,bringmesomeoats.”

           “Justafewoats?”saidMisha,cheerfullyandreadily.

           “Go,goquickly,”theoldmanurgedhim.

           “Andyou,Theodore,getmeapieceofchalk.”

           Onherwaypastthebutler’spantryshetoldthemtosetasamovar,thoughitwasnotatallthetimefortea.

           Fóka,thebutler,wasthemostill-temperedpersoninthehouse.Natáshalikedtotestherpoweroverhim.Hedistrustedtheorderandaskedwhetherthesamovarwasreallywanted.

           “Ohdear,whatayounglady!”saidFóka,pretendingtofrownatNatásha.

           NooneinthehousesentpeopleaboutorgavethemasmuchtroubleasNatáshadid.Shecouldnotseepeopleunconcernedly,buthadtosendthemonsomeerrand.Sheseemedtobetryingwhetheranyofthemwouldgetangryorsulkywithher;buttheserfsfulfillednoone’sorderssoreadilyastheydidhers.
