           “I?Waitabit,wait....Yes,firstIthoughtthatwearedrivingalongandimaginingthatwearegoinghome,butthatheavenknowswherewearereallygoinginthedarkness,andthatweshallarriveandsuddenlyfindthatwearenotinOtrádnoe,butinFairyland.AndthenIthought...No,nothingelse.”

           “Iknow,Iexpectyouthoughtofhim,”saidNicholas,smilingasNatáshaknewbythesoundofhisvoice.

           “No,”saidNatásha,thoughshehadinrealitybeenthinkingaboutPrinceAndrewatthesametimeasoftherest,andofhowhewouldhaveliked“Uncle.”“AndthenIwassayingtomyselfalltheway,‘HowwellAnísyacarriedherself,howwell!’”AndNicholasheardherspontaneous,happy,ringinglaughter.“Anddoyouknow,”shesuddenlysaid,“IknowthatIshallneveragainbeashappyandtranquilasIamnow.”

           “Rubbish,nonsense,humbug!”exclaimedNicholas,andhethought:“HowcharmingthisNatáshaofmineis!Ihavenootherfriendlikeherandnevershallhave.Whyshouldshemarry?Wemightalwaysdriveabouttogether!”

           “WhatadarlingthisNicholasofmineis!”thoughtNatásha.

           “Ah,therearestilllightsinthedrawingroom!”shesaid,pointingtothewindowsofthehousethatgleamedinvitinglyinthemoistvelvetydarknessofthenight.
