           “Oh,Iamsohappy!”shereplied,smiledthroughhertears,bentoverclosertohim,pausedforaninstantasifaskingherselfwhethershemight,andthenkissedhim.

           “Didyourmothertellyouthatitcannotbeforayear?”askedPrinceAndrew,stilllookingintohereyes.

           “IsitpossiblethatI—the‘chitofagirl,’aseverybodycalledme,”thoughtNatásha—“isitpossiblethatIamnowtobethewifeandtheequalofthisstrange,dear,clevermanwhomevenmyfatherlooksupto?Canitbetrue?Canitbetruethattherecanbenomoreplayingwithlife,thatnowIamgrownup,thatonmenowliesaresponsibilityformyeverywordanddeed?Yes,butwhatdidheaskme?”

           “No,”shereplied,butshehadnotunderstoodhisquestion.

           “Forgiveme!”hesaid.“Butyouaresoyoung,andIhavealreadybeenthroughsomuchinlife.Iamafraidforyou,youdonotyetknowyourself.”
