           “Iknowyoursistertoolittle,”repliedPrinceAndrew,withasarcasticsmileunderwhichhewishedtohidehisembarrassment,“tobeabletosolvesodelicateaquestion,andthenIhavenoticedthatthelessattractiveawomanisthemoreconstantsheislikelytobe,”headded,andlookedupatPierrewhowasjustapproachingthem.

           “Yes,thatistrue,Prince.Inourdays,”continuedVéra—mentioning“ourdays”aspeopleoflimitedintelligencearefondofdoing,imaginingthattheyhavediscoveredandappraisedthepeculiaritiesof“ourdays”andthathumancharacteristicschangewiththetimes—“inourdaysagirlhassomuchfreedomthatthepleasureofbeingcourtedoftenstiflesrealfeelinginher.AnditmustbeconfessedthatNatalieisverysusceptible.”ThisreturntothesubjectofNataliecausedPrinceAndrewtoknithisbrowswithdiscomfort:hewasabouttorise,butVéracontinuedwithastillmoresubtlesmile:

           PrinceAndrewfrownedandremainedsilent.

           “YouarefriendlywithBorís,aren’tyou?”askedVéra.

           “Yes,Iknowhim....”

           “IexpecthehastoldyouofhischildishloveforNatásha?”

           “Oh,therewaschildishlove?”suddenlyaskedPrinceAndrew,blushingunexpectedly.
