           Fouryearsbefore,meetingaGermancomradeinthestallsofaMoscowtheater,BerghadpointedoutVéraRostóvatohimandhadsaidinGerman,“dassollmeinWeibwerden,”*andfromthatmomenthadmadeuphismindtomarryher.NowinPetersburg,havingconsideredtheRostóvs’positionandhisown,hedecidedthatthetimehadcometopropose.
