           Hayne,thesamegroomwhohadbeenatAusterlitz,leduptheEmperor’shorse,andthefaintcreakofafootstepRostóvknewatoncewasheardonthestairs.Forgettingthedangerofbeingrecognized,Rostóvwentclosetotheporch,togetherwithsomeinquisitivecivilians,andagain,aftertwoyears,sawthosefeaturesheadored:thatsamefaceandsamelookandstep,andthesameunionofmajestyandmildness....AndthefeelingofenthusiasmandloveforhissovereignroseagaininRostóv’ssoulinallitsoldforce.IntheuniformofthePreobrazhénskregiment—whitechamois-leatherbreechesandhighboots—andwearingastarRostóvdidnotknow(itwasthatoftheLégiond’honneur),themonarchcameoutintotheporch,puttingonhisglovesandcarryinghishatunderhisarm.Hestoppedandlookedabouthim,brighteningeverythingaroundbyhisglance.Hespokeafewwordstosomeofthegenerals,and,recognizingtheformercommanderofRostóv’sdivision,smiledandbeckonedtohim.

           AllthesuitedrewbackandRostóvsawthegeneraltalkingforsometimetotheEmperor.

           TheEmperorsaidafewwordstohimandtookasteptowardhishorse.Againthecrowdofmembersofthesuiteandstreetgazers(amongwhomwasRostóv)movednearertotheEmperor.Stoppingbesidehishorse,withhishandonthesaddle,theEmperorturnedtothecavalrygeneralandsaidinaloudvoice,evidentlywishingtobeheardbyall:

           “Icannotdoit,General.Icannot,becausethelawisstrongerthanI,”andheraisedhisfoottothestirrup
