           Onemorning,betweensevenandeight,returningafterasleeplessnight,hesentforembers,changedhisrain-soakedunderclothes,saidhisprayers,dranktea,gotwarm,thentidiedupthethingsonthetableandinhisowncorner,and,hisfaceglowingfromexposuretothewindandwithnothingonbuthisshirt,laydownonhisback,puttinghisarmsunderhishead.Hewaspleasantlyconsideringtheprobabilityofbeingpromotedinafewdaysforhislastreconnoiteringexpedition,andwasawaitingDenísov,whohadgoneoutsomewhereandwithwhomhewantedatalk.

           SuddenlyheheardDenísovshoutinginavibratingvoicebehindthehut,evidentlymuchexcited.Rostóvmovedtothewindowtoseewhomhewasspeakingto,andsawthequartermaster,Topchéenko.
