           Lifeintheregiment,duringthiscampaign,wasallthepleasanterforhim,because,afterhislosstoDólokhov(forwhich,inspiteofallhisfamily’seffortstoconsolehim,hecouldnotforgivehimself),hehadmadeuphismindtoatoneforhisfaultbyserving,notashehaddonebefore,butreallywell,andbybeingaperfectlyfirst-ratecomradeandofficer—inaword,asplendidmanaltogether,athingwhichseemedsodifficultoutintheworld,butsopossibleintheregiment.

           Afterhislosses,hehaddeterminedtopaybackhisdebttohisparentsinfiveyears.Hereceivedtenthousandrublesayear,butnowresolvedtotakeonlytwothousandandleavetheresttorepaythedebttohisparents.

           Ourarmy,afterrepeatedretreatsandadvancesandbattlesatPultúskandPreussisch-Eylau,wasconcentratednearBartenstein.ItwasawaitingtheEmperor’sarrivalandthebeginningofanewcampaign.

           ThePávlogradregiment,belongingtothatpartofthearmywhichhadservedinthe1805campaign,hadbeenrecruitinguptostrengthinRussia,andarrivedtoolatetotakepartinthefirstactionsofthecampaign.IthadbeenneitheratPultúsknoratPreussisch-Eylauand,whenitjoinedthearmyinthefieldinthesecondhalfofthecampaign,wasattachedtoPlátov’sdivision.

           Plátov’sdivisionwasactingindependentlyofthemainarmy.SeveraltimespartsofthePávlogradregimenthadexchangedshotswiththeenemy,hadtakenprisoners,andoncehadevencapturedMarshalOudinot’scarriages.
