           “Yes,Iwasbroughtupquitedifferently,”remarkedthehandsomeelderdaughter,CountessVéra,withasmile.

           ButthesmiledidnotenhanceVéra’sbeautyassmilesgenerallydo;onthecontraryitgaveheranunnatural,andthereforeunpleasant,expression.Vérawasgood-looking,notatallstupid,quickatlearning,waswellbroughtup,andhadapleasantvoice;whatshesaidwastrueandappropriate,yet,strangetosay,everyone—thevisitorsandcountessalike—turnedtolookatherasifwonderingwhyshehadsaidit,andtheyallfeltawkward.
