           Ontheotherhand,Pierredemandedthatstepsshouldbetakentoliberatetheserfs,whichthestewardmetbyshowingthenecessityoffirstpayingofftheloansfromtheLandBank,andtheconsequentimpossibilityofaspeedyemancipation.

           Thestewarddidnotsayitwasquiteimpossible,butsuggestedsellingtheforestsintheprovinceofKostromá,thelandlowerdowntheriver,andtheCrimeanestate,inordertomakeitpossible:allofwhichoperationsaccordingtohimwereconnectedwithsuchcomplicatedmeasures—theremovalofinjunctions,petitions,permits,andsoon—thatPierrebecamequitebewilderedandonlyreplied:
