           Dólokhovwhowasinthemidstofthecrowdforcedhiswaytotheedgeofthedam,throwingtwosoldiersofftheirfeet,andranontotheslipperyicethatcoveredthemillpool.

           “Turnthisway!”heshouted,jumpingovertheicewhichcreakedunderhim;“turnthisway!”heshoutedtothosewiththegun.“Itbears!...”

           Theiceborehimbutitswayedandcreaked,anditwasplainthatitwouldgivewaynotonlyunderacannonoracrowd,butverysoonevenunderhisweightalone.Themenlookedathimandpressedtothebank,hesitatingtostepontotheice.ThegeneralonhorsebackattheentrancetothedamraisedhishandandopenedhismouthtoaddressDólokhov.Suddenlyacannonballhissedsolowabovethecrowdthateveryoneducked.Itfloppedintosomethingmoist,andthegeneralfellfromhishorseinapoolofblood.Nobodygavehimalookorthoughtofraisinghim.

           “Getontotheice,overtheice!Goon!Turn!Don’tyouhear?Goon!”innumerablevoicessuddenlyshoutedaftertheballhadstruckthegeneral,thementhemselvesnotknowingwhat,orwhy,theywereshouting.

           Oneofthehindmostgunsthatwasgoingontothedamturnedoffontotheice.Crowdsofsoldiersfromthedambeganrunningontothefrozenpond.Theicegavewayunderoneoftheforemostsoldiers,andonelegslippedintothewater.Hetriedtorighthimselfbutfellinuptohiswaist.Thenearestsoldiersshrankback,thegundriverstoppedhishorse,butfrombehindstillcametheshouts:“Ontotheice,whydoyoustop?Goon!Goon!”Andcriesofhorrorwereheardinthecrowd
