           PartoftheRussianforcehadalreadydescendedintothevalleytowardthepondsandlakesandpartwereleavingthesePratzenHeightswhichheintendedtoattackandregardedasthekeytotheposition.HesawoverthemistthatinahollowbetweentwohillsnearthevillageofPratzen,theRussiancolumns,theirbayonetsglittering,weremovingcontinuouslyinonedirectiontowardthevalleyanddisappearingoneafteranotherintothemist.Frominformationhehadreceivedtheeveningbefore,fromthesoundofwheelsandfootstepsheardbytheoutpostsduringthenight,bythedisorderlymovementoftheRussiancolumns,andfromallindications,hesawclearlythatthealliesbelievedhimtobefarawayinfrontofthem,andthatthecolumnsmovingnearPratzenconstitutedthecenteroftheRussianarmy,andthatthatcenterwasalreadysufficientlyweakenedtobesuccessfullyattacked.Butstillhedidnotbegintheengagement.

           Todaywasagreatdayforhim—theanniversaryofhiscoronation.Beforedawnhehadsleptforafewhours,andrefreshed,vigorous,andingoodspirits,hemountedhishorseandrodeoutintothefieldinthathappymoodinwhicheverythingseemspossibleandeverythingsucceeds.Hesatmotionless,lookingattheheightsvisibleabovethemist,andhiscoldfaceworethatspeciallookofconfident,self-complacenthappinessthatoneseesonthefaceofaboyhappilyinlove.Themarshalsstoodbehindhimnotventuringtodistracthisattention.HelookednowatthePratzenHeights,nowatthesunfloatingupoutofthemist
