           “Astoyourbusiness,”PrinceAndrewcontinued,addressingBorís,“wewilltalkofitlater”(andhelookedroundatRostóv).“Cometomeafterthereviewandwewilldowhatispossible.”

           And,havingglancedroundtheroom,PrinceAndrewturnedtoRostóv,whosestateofunconquerablechildishembarrassmentnowchangingtoangerhedidnotcondescendtonotice,andsaid:“IthinkyouweretalkingoftheSchönGrabernaffair?Wereyouthere?”

           “Iwasthere,”saidRostóvangrily,asifintendingtoinsulttheaide-de-camp.

           Bolkónskinoticedthehussar’sstateofmind,anditamusedhim.Withaslightlycontemptuoussmile,hesaid:“Yes,therearemanystoriesnowtoldaboutthataffair!”

           “Yes,stories!”repeatedRostóvloudly,lookingwitheyessuddenlygrownfurious,nowatBorís,nowatBolkónski.“Yes,manystories!Butourstoriesarethestoriesofmenwhohavebeenundertheenemy’sfire!Ourstorieshavesomeweight,notlikethestoriesofthosefellowsonthestaffwhogetrewardswithoutdoinganything!”

           “Ofwhomyouimaginemetobeone?”saidPrinceAndrew,withaquietandparticularlyamiablesmile.

           Astrangefeelingofexasperationandyetofrespectforthisman’sself-possessionmingledatthatmomentinRostóv’ssoul.
