           Bergheldasmokingpipebetweenhisknees.Borís,intheaccuratewaycharacteristicofhim,wasbuildingalittlepyramidofchessmenwithhisdelicatewhitefingerswhileawaitingBerg’smove,andwatchedhisopponent’sface,evidentlythinkingaboutthegameashealwaysthoughtonlyofwhateverhewasengagedon.

           “Well,howareyougoingtogetoutofthat?”heremarked.

           “We’lltryto,”repliedBerg,touchingapawnandthenremovinghishand.

           Atthatmomentthedooropened.

           “Hereheisatlast!”shoutedRostóv.“AndBergtoo!Oh,youpetisenfans,allaycushaydormir!”heexclaimed,imitatinghisRussiannurse’sFrench,atwhichheandBorísusedtolaughlongago.

           “Dearme,howyouhavechanged!”

           BorísrosetomeetRostóv,butindoingsodidnotomittosteadyandreplacesomechessmenthatwerefalling.Hewasabouttoembracehisfriend,butNicholasavoidedhim.Withthatpeculiarfeelingofyouth,thatdreadofbeatentracks,andwishtoexpressitselfinamannerdifferentfromthatofitselderswhichisofteninsincere,Nicholaswishedtodosomethingspecialonmeetinghisfriend.Hewantedtopinchhim,pushhim,doanythingbutkisshim—athingeverybodydid.Butnotwithstandingthis,Borísembracedhiminaquiet,friendlywayandkissedhimthreetimes.

           Theyhadnotmetfornearlyhalfayearand,beingattheagewhenyoungmentaketheirfirststepsonlife’sroad,eachsawimmensechangesintheother,quiteanewreflectionofthesocietyinwhichtheyhadtakenthosefirststeps.
