           OnHélène’snameday,asmallpartyofjusttheirownpeople—ashiswifesaid—metforsupperatPrinceVasíli’s.Allthesefriendsandrelationshadbeengiventounderstandthatthefateoftheyounggirlwouldbedecidedthatevening.Thevisitorswereseatedatsupper.PrincessKurágina,aportlyimposingwomanwhohadoncebeenhandsome,wassittingattheheadofthetable.Oneithersideofhersatthemoreimportantguests—anoldgeneralandhiswife,andAnnaPávlovnaSchérer.Attheotherendsattheyoungerandlessimportantguests,andtheretoosatthemembersofthefamily,andPierreandHélène,sidebyside.PrinceVasíliwasnothavinganysupper:hewentroundthetableinamerrymood,sittingdownnowbyone,nowbyanother,oftheguests.ToeachofthemhemadesomecarelessandagreeableremarkexcepttoPierreandHélène,whosepresenceheseemednottonotice.Heenlivenedthewholeparty.Thewaxcandlesburnedbrightly,thesilverandcrystalgleamed,sodidtheladies’toiletsandthegoldandsilverofthemen’sepaulets;servantsinscarletliveriesmovedroundthetable,theclatterofplates,knives,andglassesmingledwiththeanimatedhumofseveralconversations.Atoneendofthetable,theoldchamberlainwasheardassuringanoldbaronessthathelovedherpassionately,atwhichshelaughed;attheothercouldbeheardthestoryofthemisfortunesofsomeMaryVíktorovnaorother.Atthecenterofthetable,PrinceVasíliattractedeverybody’sattention.
