           Hadhethoughtouthisplansbeforehandhecouldnothavebeensonaturalandshownsuchunaffectedfamiliarityinintercoursewitheverybodybothaboveandbelowhiminsocialstanding.Somethingalwaysdrewhimtowardthosericherandmorepowerfulthanhimselfandhehadrareskillinseizingthemostopportunemomentformakinguseofpeople.

           Pierre,onunexpectedlybecomingCountBezúkhovandarichman,felthimselfafterhisrecentlonelinessandfreedomfromcaressobesetandpreoccupiedthatonlyinbedwasheabletobebyhimself.Hehadtosignpapers,topresenthimselfatgovernmentoffices,thepurposeofwhichwasnotcleartohim,toquestionhischiefsteward,tovisithisestatenearMoscow,andtoreceivemanypeoplewhoformerlydidnotevenwishtoknowofhisexistencebutwouldnowhavebeenoffendedandgrievedhadhechosennottoseethem.Thesedifferentpeople—businessmen,relations,andacquaintancesalike—werealldisposedtotreattheyoungheirinthemostfriendlyandflatteringmanner:theywereallevidentlyfirmlyconvincedofPierre’snoblequalities.Hewasalwayshearingsuchwordsas:“Withyourremarkablekindness,”or,“Withyourexcellentheart,”“Youareyourselfsohonorable,Count,”or,“Wereheascleverasyou,”andsoon,tillhebegansincerelytobelieveinhisownexceptionalkindnessandextraordinaryintelligence,themoresoasinthedepthofhisheartithadalwaysseemedtohimthathereallywasverykindandintelligent.Evenpeoplewhohadformerlybeenspitefultowardhimandevidentlyunfriendlynowbecamegentleandaffectionate.
