           TheRussianofficerinchargeofthetransportlolledbackinthefrontcart,shoutingandscoldingasoldierwithcoarseabuse.IneachofthelongGermancartssixormorepale,dirty,bandagedmenwerebeingjoltedoverthestonyroad.Someofthemweretalking(heheardRussianwords),otherswereeatingbread;themoreseverelywoundedlookedsilently,withthelanguidinterestofsickchildren,attheenvoyhurryingpastthem.

           PrinceAndrewtoldhisdrivertostop,andaskedasoldierinwhatactiontheyhadbeenwounded.“Daybeforeyesterday,ontheDanube,”answeredthesoldier.PrinceAndrewtookouthispurseandgavethesoldierthreegoldpieces.

           “That’sforthemall,”hesaidtotheofficerwhocameup.

           “Getwellsoon,lads!”hecontinued,turningtothesoldiers.“There’splentytodostill.”

           “Whatnews,sir?”askedtheofficer,evidentlyanxioustostartaconversation.

           “Goodnews!...Goon!”heshoutedtothedriver,andtheygallopedon.

           ItwasalreadyquitedarkwhenPrinceAndrewrattledoverthepavedstreetsofBrünnandfoundhimselfsurroundedbyhighbuildings,thelightsofshops,houses,andstreetlamps,finecarriages,andallthatatmosphereofalargeandactivetownwhichisalwayssoattractivetoasoldieraftercamplife.Despitehisrapidjourneyandsleeplessnight,PrinceAndrewwhenhedroveuptothepalacefeltevenmorevigorousandalertthanhehaddonethedaybefore.Onlyhiseyesgleamedfeverishlyandhisthoughtsfollowedoneanotherwithextraordinaryclearnessandrapidity.
