           OnthethirtiethheattackedMortier’sdivision,whichwasontheleftbank,andbrokeitup.Inthisactionforthefirsttimetrophiesweretaken:banners,cannon,andtwoenemygenerals.Forthefirsttime,afterafortnight’sretreat,theRussiantroopshadhaltedandafterafighthadnotonlyheldthefieldbuthadrepulsedtheFrench.Thoughthetroopswereill-clad,exhausted,andhadlostathirdoftheirnumberinkilled,wounded,sick,andstragglers;thoughanumberofsickandwoundedhadbeenabandonedontheothersideoftheDanubewithaletterinwhichKutúzoventrustedthemtothehumanityoftheenemy;andthoughthebighospitalsandthehousesinKremsconvertedintomilitaryhospitalscouldnolongeraccommodateallthesickandwounded,yetthestandmadeatKremsandthevictoryoverMortierraisedthespiritsofthearmyconsiderably.ThroughoutthewholearmyandatheadquartersmostjoyfulthougherroneousrumorswererifeoftheimaginaryapproachofcolumnsfromRussia,ofsomevictorygainedbytheAustrians,andoftheretreatofthefrightenedBonaparte.

           PrinceAndrewduringthebattlehadbeeninattendanceontheAustrianGeneralSchmidt,whowaskilledintheaction.Hishorsehadbeenwoundedunderhimandhisownarmslightlygrazedbyabullet.Asamarkofthecommanderinchief’sspecialfavorhewassentwiththenewsofthisvictorytotheAustriancourt,nownolongeratVienna(whichwasthreatenedbytheFrench)butatBrünn.
