           Atthatinstantthesunbegantohidebehindtheclouds,andotherstretcherscameintoviewbeforeRostóv.Andthefearofdeathandofthestretchers,andloveofthesunandoflife,allmergedintoonefeelingofsickeningagitation.

           “OLordGod!Thouwhoartinthatheaven,save,forgive,andprotectme!”Rostóvwhispered.

           Thehussarsranbacktothemenwhoheldtheirhorses;theirvoicessoundedlouderandcalmer,thestretchersdisappearedfromsight.

           “Well,fwiend?Soyou’vesmeltpowdah!”shoutedVáskaDenísovjustabovehisear.

           “It’sallover;butIamacoward—yes,acoward!”thoughtRostóv,andsighingdeeplyhetookRook,hishorse,whichstoodrestingonefoot,fromtheorderlyandbegantomount.

           “Wasthatgrapeshot?”heaskedDenísov.

           “Yesandnomistake!”criedDenísov.“Youworkedlikewegularbwicksandit’snastywork!Anattack’spleasantwork!Hackingawayatthedogs!Butthissortofthingistheverydevil,withthemshootingatyoulikeatarget.”

           AndDenísovrodeuptoagroupthathadstoppednearRostóv,composedofthecolonel,Nesvítski,Zherkóv,andtheofficerfromthesuite.

           “Well,itseemsthatnoonehasnoticed,”thoughtRostóv.Andthiswastrue.Noonehadtakenanynotice,foreveryoneknewthesensationwhichthecadetunderfireforthefirsttimehadexperienced.

           “Here’ssomethingforyoutoreport,”saidZherkóv.“SeeifIdon’tgetpromotedtoasublieutenancy.”
