           TheelderlyladywasaPrincessDrubetskáya,belongingtooneofthebestfamiliesinRussia,butshewaspoor,andhavinglongbeenoutofsocietyhadlostherformerinfluentialconnections.ShehadnowcometoPetersburgtoprocureanappointmentintheGuardsforheronlyson.Itwas,infact,solelytomeetPrinceVasílithatshehadobtainedaninvitationtoAnnaPávlovna’sreceptionandhadsatlisteningtothevicomte’sstory.
