           Itwouldbeamistaketothinkthatthisisironic—acaricatureofthehistoricalaccounts.Onthecontraryitisaverymildexpressionofthecontradictoryreplies,notmeetingthequestions,whichallthehistoriansgive,fromthecompilersofmemoirsandthehistoriesofseparatestatestothewritersofgeneralhistoriesandthenewhistoriesofthecultureofthatperiod.

           Thestrangenessandabsurdityoftheserepliesarisefromthefactthatmodernhistory,likeadeafman,answersquestionsnoonehasasked.

           Ifthepurposeofhistorybetogiveadescriptionofthemovementofhumanityandofthepeoples,thefirstquestion—intheabsenceofareplytowhichalltherestwillbeincomprehensible—is:whatisthepowerthatmovespeoples?Tothis,modernhistorylaboriouslyreplieseitherthatNapoleonwasagreatgenius,orthatLouisXIVwasveryproud,orthatcertainwriterswrotecertainbooks
