           Pierre,answeringNatásha’swords,toldherhowintolerableithadbeenforhimtomeetladiesatdinnersandballsinPetersburg.

           “Ihavequitelosttheknackoftalkingtoladies,”hesaid.“Itwassimplydull.Besides,Iwasverybusy.”

           Natáshalookedintentlyathimandwenton:

           “Maryissosplendid,”shesaid.“Howsheunderstandschildren!Itisasifshesawstraightintotheirsouls.Yesterday,forinstance,Mítyawasnaughty...”

           “Howlikehisfatherheis,”Pierreinterjected.

           NatáshaknewwhyhementionedMítya’slikenesstoNicholas:therecollectionofhisdisputewithhisbrother-in-lawwasunpleasantandhewantedtoknowwhatNatáshathoughtofit.

           “Nicholashastheweaknessofneveragreeingwithanythingnotgenerallyaccepted.ButIunderstandthatyouvaluewhatopensupafreshline,”saidshe,repeatingwordsPierrehadonceuttered.

           “No,thechiefpointisthattoNicholasideasanddiscussionsareanamusement—almostapastime,”saidPierre.
