           Tofluffouthercurls,putonfashionabledresses,andsingromanticsongstofascinateherhusbandwouldhaveseemedasstrangeastoadornherselftoattractherself.Toadornherselfforothersmightperhapshavebeenagreeable—shedidnotknow—butshehadnotimeatallforit.Thechiefreasonfordevotingnotimeeithertosinging,todress,ortochoosingherwordswasthatshereallyhadnotimetospareforthesethings.

           Weknowthatmanhasthefacultyofbecomingcompletelyabsorbedinasubjecthowevertrivialitmaybe,andthatthereisnosubjectsotrivialthatitwillnotgrowtoinfiniteproportionsifone’sentireattentionisdevotedtoit.

           ThesubjectwhichwhollyengrossedNatásha’sattentionwasherfamily:thatis,herhusbandwhomshehadtokeepsothatheshouldbelongentirelytoherandtothehome,andthechildrenwhomshehadtobear,bringintotheworld,nurse,andbringup.
