           WithinhalfanhouradjutantshadbeensentinvariousdirectionswithorderswhichshowedthattheRussiantroops,whohadhithertobeeninactive,wouldalsosoonhavetomeettheenemy.

           PrinceAndrewwasoneofthoserarestaffofficerswhosechiefinterestlayinthegeneralprogressofthewar.WhenhesawMackandheardthedetailsofhisdisasterheunderstoodthathalfthecampaignwaslost,understoodallthedifficultiesoftheRussianarmy’sposition,andvividlyimaginedwhatawaiteditandtheparthewouldhavetoplay.InvoluntarilyhefeltajoyfulagitationatthethoughtofthehumiliationofarrogantAustriaandthatinaweek’stimehemight,perhaps,seeandtakepartinthefirstRussianencounterwiththeFrenchsinceSuvórovmetthem.HefearedthatBonaparte’sgeniusmightoutweighallthecourageoftheRussiantroops,andatthesametimecouldnotadmittheideaofhisherobeingdisgraced.

           ExcitedandirritatedbythesethoughtsPrinceAndrewwenttowardhisroomtowritetohisfather,towhomhewroteeveryday.InthecorridorhemetNesvítski,withwhomhesharedaroom,andthewagZherkóv;theywereasusuallaughing.

           “Whyareyousoglum?”askedNesvítskinoticingPrinceAndrew’spalefaceandglitteringeyes.

           “There’snothingtobegayabout,”answeredBolkónski.
