           NotoneoftheplansNicholastriedsucceeded;theestatewassoldbyauctionforhalfitsvalue,andhalfthedebtsstillremainedunpaid.Nicholasacceptedthirtythousandrublesofferedhimbyhisbrother-in-lawBezúkhovtopayoffdebtsheregardedasgenuinelydueforvaluereceived.Andtoavoidbeingimprisonedfortheremainder,asthecreditorsthreatened,here-enteredthegovernmentservice.
