           AfewminuteslaterthefootmanreturnedwithDessalles,whobroughtwordfromtheprincessthatshewouldbeverygladtoseePierreifhewouldexcuseherwantofceremonyandcomeupstairstoherapartment.

           Inaratherlowroomlitbyonecandlesattheprincessandwithheranotherpersondressedinblack.Pierrerememberedthattheprincessalwayshadladycompanions,butwhotheywereandwhattheywerelikeheneverkneworremembered.
