           DuringthewholetimeofhisconvalescenceinOrëlPierrehadexperiencedafeelingofjoy,freedom,andlife;butwhenduringhisjourneyhefoundhimselfintheopenworldandsawhundredsofnewfaces,thatfeelingwasintensified.Throughouthisjourneyhefeltlikeaschoolboyonholiday.Everyone—thestagecoachdriver,thepost-houseoverseers,thepeasantsontheroadsandinthevillages—hadanewsignificanceforhim.ThepresenceandremarksofWillarskiwhocontinuallydeploredtheignoranceandpovertyofRussiaanditsbackwardnesscomparedwithEuropeonlyheightenedPierre’spleasure.WhereWillarskisawdeadnessPierresawanextraordinarystrengthandvitality—thestrengthwhichinthatvastspaceamidthesnowsmaintainedthelifeofthisoriginal,peculiar,anduniquepeople.HedidnotcontradictWillarskiandevenseemedtoagreewithhim—anapparentagreementbeingthesimplestwaytoavoiddiscussionsthatcouldleadtonothing—andhesmiledjoyfullyashelistenedtohim.
