           Healoneduringthewholeretreatinsistedthatbattles,whichwereuselessthen,shouldnotbefought,andthatanewwarshouldnotbebegunnorthefrontiersofRussiacrossed.

           Itiseasynowtounderstandthesignificanceoftheseevents—ifonlyweabstainfromattributingtotheactivityofthemassaimsthatexistedonlyintheheadsofadozenindividuals—fortheeventsandresultsnowliebeforeus.

           Buthowdidthatoldman,alone,inoppositiontothegeneralopinion,sotrulydiscerntheimportanceofthepeople’sviewoftheeventsthatinallhisactivityhewasneveronceuntruetoit?

           Thesourceofthatextraordinarypowerofpenetratingthemeaningoftheeventsthenoccuringlayinthenationalfeelingwhichhepossessedinfullpurityandstrength.

           Onlytherecognitionofthefactthathepossessedthisfeelingcausedthepeopleinsostrangeamanner,contrarytotheTsar’swish,toselecthim—anoldmanindisfavor—tobetheirrepresentativeinthenationalwar.Andonlythatfeelingplacedhimonthathighesthumanpedestalfromwhichhe,thecommanderinchief,devotedallhispowersnottoslayinganddestroyingmenbuttosavingandshowingpityonthem.

           Thatsimple,modest,andthereforetrulygreat,figurecouldnotbecastinthefalsemoldofaEuropeanhero—thesupposedrulerofmen—thathistoryhasinvented.

           Toalackeynomancanbegreat,foralackeyhashisownconceptionofgreatness.
