           Hewasthebravestandmostusefulmanintheparty.Noonefoundmoreopportunitiesforattacking,noonecapturedorkilledmoreFrenchmen,andconsequentlyhewasmadethebuffoonofalltheCossacksandhussarsandwillinglyacceptedthatrole.NowhehadbeensentbyDenísovovernighttoShámshevotocapturea“tongue.”ButwhetherbecausehehadnotbeencontenttotakeonlyoneFrenchmanorbecausehehadsleptthroughthenight,hehadcreptbydayintosomebushesrightamongtheFrenchand,asDenísovhadwitnessedfromabove,hadbeendetectedbythem.
