           Itsfirstperiodhadpassed:whenthepartisansthemselves,amazedattheirownboldness,fearedeveryminutetobesurroundedandcapturedbytheFrench,andhidintheforestswithoutunsaddling,hardlydaringtodismountandalwaysexpectingtobepursued.BytheendofOctoberthiskindofwarfarehadtakendefiniteshape:ithadbecomecleartoallwhatcouldbeventuredagainsttheFrenchandwhatcouldnot.Nowonlythecommandersofdetachmentswithstaffs,andmovingaccordingtorulesatadistancefromtheFrench,stillregardedmanythingsasimpossible.ThesmallbandsthathadstartedtheiractivitieslongbeforeandhadalreadyobservedtheFrenchcloselyconsideredthingspossiblewhichthecommandersofthebigdetachmentsdidnotdaretocontemplate.TheCossacksandpeasantswhocreptinamongtheFrenchnowconsideredeverythingpossible.

           OnOctober22,Denísov(whowasoneoftheirregulars)waswithhisgroupattheheightoftheguerrillaenthusiasm.Sinceearlymorningheandhispartyhadbeenonthemove.AlldaylonghehadbeenwatchingfromtheforestthatskirtedthehighroadalargeFrenchconvoyofcavalrybaggageandRussianprisonersseparatedfromtherestofthearmy,which—aswaslearnedfromspiesandprisoners—wasmovingunderastrongescorttoSmolénsk.BesidesDenísovandDólokhov(whoalsoledasmallpartyandmovedinDenísov’svicinity),thecommandersofsomelargedivisionswithstaffsalsoknewofthisconvoyand,asDenísovexpressedit,weresharpeningtheirteethforit.
