           Thelookofhiseyeswasresolute,calm,andanimatedlyalert,asneverbefore.Theformerslacknesswhichhadshownitselfeveninhiseyeswasnowreplacedbyanenergeticreadinessforactionandresistance.Hisfeetwerebare.

           Pierrefirstlookeddownthefieldacrosswhichvehiclesandhorsemenwerepassingthatmorning,thenintothedistanceacrosstheriver,thenatthedogwhowaspretendingtobeinearnestaboutbitinghim,andthenathisbarefeetwhichheplacedwithpleasureinvariouspositions,movinghisdirtythickbigtoes.Everytimehelookedathisbarefeetasmileofanimatedself-satisfactionflittedacrosshisface.Thesightofthemremindedhimofallhehadexperiencedandlearnedduringtheseweeksandthisrecollectionwaspleasanttohim.

           Forsomedaystheweatherhadbeencalmandclearwithslightfrostsinthemornings—whatiscalledan“oldwives’summer.”

           Inthesunshinetheairwaswarm,andthatwarmthwasparticularlypleasantwiththeinvigoratingfreshnessofthemorningfroststillintheair.

           Oneverything—farandnear—laythemagiccrystalglitterseenonlyatthattimeofautumn.TheSparrowHillswerevisibleinthedistance,withthevillage,thechurch,andthelargewhitehouse.Thebaretrees,thesand,thebricksandroofsofthehouses,thegreenchurchspire,andthecornersofthewhitehouseinthedistance,allstoodoutinthetransparentairinmostdelicateoutlineandwithunnaturalclearness.Nearbycouldbeseenthefamiliarruinsofahalf-burnedmansionoccupiedbytheFrench,withlilacbushesstillshowingdarkgreenbesidethefence.
